Through all my projects – workshops, conferences, videos, books and my website – I promote being solution-oriented and also creating win/win for all. Being solution-oriented builds resilience. Creating win/win for all prevents sabotage. Always remember, we are all role models to the next generation. Do you want to be a model of resilience for the next generation? Yes? I’ll introduce you to another resilience-building exercise today. Enjoy it and practice it often… So, from now on see each problem as an opportunity for building your ‘solution finder’ muscles… Having this perspective in mind, do the following exercise with me. I call it simply Resilience Building Exercise • See the clock? Now close your eyes • Take a deep breath from your tummy. • Hear the ticking of the clock • In your mind’s eye see the arms move to 3:00, to 4:30, to 6:45 …. can you ‘see’ the arms of the clock move? • Imagine hearing the ticking sounds…can you ‘hear’ the ticking sounds? With repeated practice, you will. • And now remind yourself “Whether it is the best of times or the worst of times, it is the only time you’ve got.” Repeat…”Whether it is the best of times or the worst of times, it is the only time you’ve got.” • Open your eyes Get on with your day with this realistic attitude “Whether it is the best of times or the worst of times, it is the only time you’ve got.” • Memorize this say it to yourself and mean what you say! This technique brings you down to earth when you get stuck with “should be, ought to be, if only, could have, would have…” Whenever you feel self-pity, fear, or anger, bring up the image of the clock. Use the ‘reality check’ and say with conviction “Whether it is the best of times or the worst of times, it is the only time you’ve got.” • Was the image of the clock clear? • Did you hear the ticking sound of the clock? • So, are you visual or audiovisual or both? A concert pianist friend of mine had jitters and panic prior to giving a recital, would say: “Kick yourself in the butt and get going”. This helped her. Now, it is your turn. When anxious you could say: ” …………………….” Try out your choice for the next week. See if it works. If your choice is not effective, no problem, try others. However, it is important to use the same choice for a period. This conditions you to one automatic response, which is good. Actors have many practice sessions before their performance appears easy making the end result seem natural. Now you are the actor. This world is your stage.
